At the World Grand Prix Music online competition, trombonist Zoltán Kalmár from Békéscsaba won the absolute first place in the professional category, reports Magyar Nemzet.
The online competition attracted 313 entries from 37 countries. The Hungarian trombonist put together the competition’s program from Máté Hollós’ Trombondine and Trombonepistola and József Sári’s Ananta.
Zoltán Kalmár began his musical studies in Törökszentmiklós (near Budapest) Kodály Zoltán Primary Art Education Institution. He graduated from the János Pálfy Secondary School in Szolnok (central Hungary) in 2000, then continued his studies at the Béla Bartók Secondary School of Music in Békéscsaba (southeastern Hungary).
He started his higher studies in the University of Szeged (southern Hungary) in 2005, as a trombone teacher and chamber musician, and then graduated as a trombone teacher and artist under György Gyivicsán. In 2016, he launched a series of concerts entitled RÉZ(k)ARCOK to introduce contemporary brass music to the public and make them love it. In the same year, he released his first solo CD Les impressions with pianist György Klebniczki, featuring 20th century French trombone music. His second album, entitled RÉZ(k)ARCOK, was released in 2019, and featured trombone arrangements of works by contemporary Hungarian composers.
