Last December, the European Council’s suspended EU funds to public interest trusts, despite the Hungarian government’s fulfillment of all the commitments communicated in writing by the European Commission. This included the resignation of political trustees, despite several similar international examples.

Despite all these, the international student and teacher exchange programs, i.e. Erasmus, are ongoing. The Tempus Public Foundation has made all the decisions necessary for the trips this fall, and the universities have the funds for this, so the applications for next spring can be announced on schedule, Károly Czibere, president of the organization’s board of trustees, told Magyar Nemzet.

He added that the public foundation feels it has a moral duty to represent the interests of Hungarian students and teachers in a situation where the European Council’s decision restricts this.

The Tempus Public Foundation has a duty to ensure that the European Council’s implementing regulation does not in any way affect Hungarian students, teachers, and researchers preparing for the Erasmus competition,”

Czibere said in an interview.

“The president of the board of trustees urged us to remain calm, because Erasmus trips and the reception of students arriving in Hungary will continue until June 30, 2024, and all legal conditions and resources are available at Tempus and are in the budget’, the president maintained.

In August this year, Tempus decided to allocate 1.8 billion HUF (EUR 46,417 million) to the model-switching universities that will also cover the international programs even beyond the planned increase. As the president stressed, the aim is to enable more and more Hungarian students to gain international experience and then put this knowledge to good use at home.

We are confident that after June 30, 2024, thanks to successful negotiations, Hungarian academics and researchers will not be penalized, but we are also working on a new internationalization program with the involvement of universities,

Czibere stressed.
