“The mandatory relocations and migrant quotas have been issues for years,” said Balázs Hidvéghi, Fidesz MEP, on the Sunday Newspaper program on Kossuth Radio. In his view, the main question is who is responsible and where for making decisions on these issues. While Brussels insists that the Hungarian government and the Hungarian parliament should make the decision, the migration pact in its current form would rather concern the European Commission, leaving Brussels bureaucrats to opt for the consequences which will seriously affect the lives of Hungarians for a long time.
Balázs Hidvéghi stressed that further trilateral talks between the European Council, the European Commission and the European Parliament are expected, there will be a parliamentary debate and vote, and a package could even be adopted that goes openly against the interests of Member States. He added that Hungary and Poland have repeatedly voted against the pact while the Czechs, Slovaks, and Austrians have also abstained or voted against it.
Moreover, the Fidesz MEP added that the migration pact could be adopted by a qualified majority, which is a serious problem as it affects broad sections of society, and therefore it should not be decided by non-unanimity. Immigration has become one of Europe’s greatest challenges.

he emphasized, referring to the agreement with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on the Syrian influx.
It is also “very important to stabilize the Balkan region and to include those countries in the region that are not yet EU members, since this will make it easier to protect the region and to cooperate,” he said.
“In several states, we can see the long-term problems caused by migration, social tensions, and deteriorating public security,” he noted, referring to recent reports that the government in Sweden is considering deploying the army because the police are no longer enough to maintain order in Stockholm, Uppsala, or Malmö. In France, too, the deterioration of public safety is a constant theme, with 238 new gendarmeries being set up, the problem is apparently getting out of hand,” he said. “Hungary and the Central European region must not be allowed to go down this path,” he repeated.
According to Hidvéghi, the prevailing tone in the European Parliament makes a reasonable debate impossible. For example, “the Swedish MEP Charlie Wilmers, who listed the names of the victims of bombings, attacks, and clashes between migrants, was simply laughed at by several left-wing MEPs,” concluded the Fidesz MEP.
