Dominik Szoboszlai Continues to Excel in England

Liverpool hosted Belgian side Union Saint-Gilloise in Group E of the 2nd round of the UEFA Europa League yesterday. Dominik Szoboszlai was not in the starting line-up, but his team still won 2-0. A recent statistic about the Hungarian player showed that no one has run as much as him in the seven rounds of the Premier League this season.

PFF analytics firm shared in a post on Twitter saying that Dominik Szoboszlai has run 83.6 kilometers in his seven league appearances so far, the best in perhaps the toughest football league in the world.

“He’s a natural!”

That is what Trent Alexander-Arnold thinks of his teammate Dominik Szoboszlai, based on a statement the English right-back made to Eurosport. If one of the world’s best defenders has such a high opinion of the 22-year-old midfielder, it is safe to say that the Hungarian was not left out of his team’s starting eleven against Union SG yesterday because of his playing ability. Jürgen Klopp only brought on Szoboszlai in the 79th minute, for just 15 minutes. As the head coach explained, the team needs to work to avoid a wave of injuries, which they do not have at the moment, and which hopefully will stay that way. This is the reason why Szoboszlai only got ten minutes against the Belgian top flight.

Not only did Szoboszlai run the most this season, but in the game against Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, he sprinted so fast that he finished second in the Premier League ranking. Only Manchester City defender Kyle Walker sprinted faster than him, at 37.31 kph in the 2022/2023 season.

Fact

The 22-year-old footballer’s remarkable performances have not gone unnoticed. Liverpool’s website has reported that Szoboszlai has been named the Liverpool Standard Chartered Men’s Player of the Month for August. After receiving the award voted on by the fans, he said: “I’m just doing my thing, helping the team and happy that I can do my best. (…) I think there’s always more to come,” he continued. “I can also improve a lot and also try to look to the players who are here almost seven years or even more, or a little bit less here. Trying to take some advice from them and just continue like this.”

The Hungarian captain signed for Liverpool from RB Leipzig in the summer and immediately became a regular starter for the club.

He has already scored against Aston Villa in the Premier League and recently in the League Cup, scoring a bomb in a 3-1 win over Leicester City.
