Rheinmetall will carry out the maintenance and repair of Ukrainian combat vehicles and self-propelled guns in Romania, the spokesman for the German arms manufacturing group said on Sunday.
“Rheinmetall is working intensively on the construction of a military maintenance and logistics center of the NATO partner Romania,” said an official, adding that construction work has already begun in the Szatmárnémeti (Satu-Mare) region near the Ukrainian border. This can positively affect the employment statistics in the region, considering the economic circumstances of Hungarian people in Romania, therefore new workplaces are crucial.
The center could be operational as early as next April. It is expected to
play a central role in maintaining the deployability of Western weapon systems in Ukraine, ensuring their logistical supply.”
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall, stressed that one of the company’s “central ambitions is to provide the best possible support to the NATO forces and Ukraine in this critical situation.”
The facility will be capable of servicing self-propelled guns, German Leopard, British Challenger armored vehicles, Marder, Fuchs infantry fighting vehicles, and military trucks.
In June 2022, Rheinmetall, together with partner KMW, established a similar maintenance center in Jonava, Lithuania to support the Lithuanian army and NATO forces stationed in the Baltic States.
