Hungary and Slovakia signed an agreement on nuclear cooperation, with the aim of coordinating their participation in the development of nuclear power plants so that the latest technologies can be deployed as soon as possible, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said in Bratislava on Wednesday.
Péter Szijjártó signed the agreement with Slovak Economy Minister, Peter Dovhun, declaring the two countries will coordinate their participation in nuclear development.
This will help us to use these new technologies in our national energy plans as soon as possible,”
explained the Foreign Minister.
He stressed that the best solution to the energy crisis in Europe is the expansion of nuclear power capacity, as nuclear power plants can produce large amounts of electricity cheaply and safely. Moreover, nuclear energy is very environmentally friendly, as shown by the fact that the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant will replace 17 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Péter Szijjártó warned his politician counterpart that in Europe “there are still serious ideological and politically motivated efforts to disadvantage nuclear energy and to deprive countries that otherwise rely heavily on nuclear energy in their national energy of the opportunity to use it. This is the case in Hungary and Slovakia. For both Hungary and Slovakia, nuclear energy plays an important role in the security of energy supply. Phasing out nuclear energy would be contrary to our national interests,” he added.
Nuclear energy is a solution to the energy crisis in Europe, and it is good news that we can now coordinate our efforts in this regard with our neighbors.”
At the same time, the industry is undergoing extraordinary technological developments, the politician stressed. It is in our interest to participate in these developments, it is in our interest to see what happens, and to be able to use new generation nuclear solutions in the future to ensure the security of our energy supply, he emphasized.
