22 Hungarians to Compete at the Karate World Championships in Budapest

Twenty-two Hungarian competitors will participate at the World Karate Championships in Budapest from October 24 to 29.

The list of the Hungarian contestants in form (kata) has already been drawn up and the list of the Hungarian participants in combat (kumite) has now been decided.

In the László Papp Budapest Sports Arena, there will be Hungarian competitors in all individual and team categories, with a total of 22 participants.

Gábor Hárspataki (75 kg), Olympic bronze medalist in Tokyo, will be in action, having confidently won in his category at his last preparation event, the Budapest Open, a week and a half ago. Also in the squad is former World silver medalist, multiple European bronze medalist, and last year’s World Games silver medalist Yves Martial Tadissi (67 kg), and last year’s European champion, Dániel György (84 kg).

In the women’s competition, former European age-group champion Aleksandra Ilankovic (61 kg) showed the best form during the preparations, defeating several world class players at the Budapest Open.

In the men’s individual event, Botond Nagy, who just missed out on a medal at this year’s European Championships, will be the Hungarian starter. In the women’s event, the audience can cheer on Laura Sterck, the Hungarian champion of the last ten years.

As for the four team events, the women’s team will be strengthened in the fight by Boussebaa Aicha, who won silver at last year’s European Championships. Coach Zsuzsanna Anti will also take the field.

The first Karate World Championships in Hungary will see the qualification rounds for the individual categories on Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by the team qualification rounds on Thursday and Friday, while the bronze medals and finals will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

The World Championships will also include medals in the para-karate events, for which the Hungarian Karate Federation has entered 18 competitors.

It was reported over the summer that the organizers expect a full house at the event in Budapest. “For the time being, we only have preliminary reservations, but we expect to host between 1,200 and 1,800 competitors,” said Márton Falusi, vice-president of the Hungarian Karate Federation. In addition to them, we are expecting around 1,000 more people, judges, coaches, and other officials. During the four days of qualification we expect a strong Hungarian fan presence.
