Germany’s public broadcaster had surprised its Hungarian viewers with a message popularizing female sterilization. The media outlet that is financed by federal taxpayer funds deemed the message important enough to translate it from the original German into Hungarian.
Deutsche Well (DW) operates with a generous annual revenue of some EUR 400 million that includes not only German taxpayer money, but also funds from the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation program, the one that Hungarian students have been expelled from due to Brussels’ disagreement with some of the Budapest government’s policies.
Seemingly not content with spreading anti-family programs at home despite Germany’s dire demographic figures, its editors have decided to translate its anti-motherhood message into Hungarian as well. The short video, which Hungary Today will not embed into the article due to editorial reasons, features German theater director Jasmin Hawlicek, who speaks about her apparently positive experience of being sterilized.
In the video, the German woman speaks about her experience of being sterilized at the age of 25.
“I never wanted to be a mother!”
– says the woman who has had surgery to make her fallopian tubes impenetrable. “I never wanted to dedicate my life to a child,” she adds. She regards her personal experience of female sterilization as a step towards perfection: “My body is now a little closer to what is perfect for me, which is that I cannot get pregnant,” she explains. Hawlicek also admits that she has no partner either, but she does not think it matters. “After all, it is my body,” says the German theater director.
When in 2021, DW had resumed its broadcasting in German, its director general Peter Limbourg explained the move by saying that “We are seeing that media diversity and press freedom are getting worse all the time in Hungary.” At the time, government spokesman Zoltan Kovács replied by saying that “DW is deeply biased and has been fuelling irrational Orbánophobia for years. If that is what you call German ‘public service’ media, then we are deeply concerned about media pluralism in Germany. Having the audacity to bring us otherwise deprived, unenlightened Hungarians ‘real stories’ from Berlin, is another sad example of the left-liberal German media’s embodiment of the dictatorship of opinion. The arrogance is breathtaking.”
Why the taxpayer-funded German broadcaster deems it a service to Hungarian media pluralism to advertise anti-family messages at the time when Europe is battling with a severe demographic crisis and a general breakdown of family values, is baffling. The Hungarian government has spent enormous resources in the past decade to reverse these trends by supporting families with a wide range of measures. It has enjoyed some considerable success in this regard, and its continuing message is that low birthrates should be reversed by supporting families, marriages, and child-bearing, rather than mass immigration.
