In the absence of peace, many efforts for sustainable development may be jeopardized or remain ineffective, said President Katalin Novák on Monday in New York, as the co-moderator of the High-Level Meeting on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
As the head of the Hungarian delegation to the UN General Assembly, the Head of State sent a message that “we must work together to find a path to peace in all conflict-affected regions of the world, because without peace, threats increase, the arms race intensifies, and international relations are disrupted.”
She stressed that she wanted to amplify the voices of those who are suffering from war at the UN in front of the world leaders. She also mentioned that she had recently visited Ukraine and brought a message from the people of Ukraine to the meeting.
Katalin Novák called attention to the threat to societies, saying that if families are destroyed, schools neglected, and the Church discredited, “we will lose the moral anchor of our lives and of humanity, and that is a fatal mistake.”
In the next point of her speech, she called for responsible parenting and parenthood, reflecting the principles of sustainability. As she put it, children must be preserved for the world, because “a world of empty cradles” is not worth fighting for.
Novák also reinforced
Hungary’s commitment to sustainable development by pointing out that Hungary is ranked 22nd out of 166 countries in the 2023 Global Sustainable Development Ranking.
The Leaders’ Dialogue on Sustainability with heads of state and government was also addressed by Croatian President Zoran Milanovic, Austrian President Alexander van der Bellen, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, as well as Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, who also co-moderated the event. On Monday, Novák held separate talks with the Kazakh Head of State, with whom she discussed bilateral relations, cultural cooperation, and the opportunities arising from Hungary’s EU membership.
