The complete renovation of the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Győr that started in 2017, has been completed. The church was rededicated on Wednesday during a holy mass by András Veres, Bishop of Győr, President of the Hungarian Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
During the more than HUF 4 billion (EUR 10.5 million), mostly state-funded project, the façade of the main church was renewed, and the tower was modernized, receiving new bells. The ceiling frescoes and baroque wall paintings were restored, and the main and side altars and the choir loft were renovated. Limestone tiles replaced the tiles laid in the second half of the 20th century. The technical building, lighting, heating, security, and sound systems were also modernized.
A chapel of perpetual adoration and a treasury have been built in the cathedral, where the sacred treasures of the cathedral will be kept in the future.
At the holy mass, Bishop Veres stressed that cathedrals play a decisive role in the life of the Church. The seat of a bishop appointed by the Pope is a sign that the Church in a given area is organized and “in communion with Rome.”
“We, the people of Győr, are proud of our church,” the bishop said. We are also proud that
the cathedral houses the icon of Our Lady weeping tears of blood, the hermitage of St. László, and the tomb of Blessed Bishop Vilmos Apor, who died a martyr’s death in 1945,
he continued.
The bishop concluded by thanking the government for its support, saying that the church renovation would have been impossible without its help. “I believe, that the renovation has not only supported the faithful of the Diocese of Győr, not only the Hungarian faithful who regularly make pilgrimages to the shrine,” but also strengthened Hungary’s image through people from Europe and even further afield, he added.
