Agricultural relations between Hungary and Uzbekistan are continuously strengthening, said Agriculture Minister István Nagy, who held talks with his Uzbek counterpart, Aziz Voitov, in Samarkand on Wednesday.

The minister noted that talks and cooperation between the two countries are not only on a theoretical level, but also at the project level. István Nagy stressed that food security is a strategic issue to which both countries are paying great attention. He also pointed out

the need for joint responses to the challenges posed by climate change, such as drought and lack of rainfall.

Modernizing and developing irrigation with Hungarian experts is an opportunity that should be seized in the region.

The minister emphasized that there should be a strong focus not only on exchanges of students but also on exchanges of researchers, joint research, and scientific cooperation. Nagy said that

the two countries should go further and cooperate not only in higher education but also in secondary education.

In 2021, news came that the University of Debrecen would be setting up its own campus in the Central Asian country, from where 100 scholarship students can come to Hungary. In 2022, the same institution further strengthened its cooperation based on knowledge transfer. The aim is to explore joint research and development opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry and to carry out tasks in the field of pharmaceutical manufacturing.

In addition, in June 2023, Dr. Kamal Saidakbarovich Rizaev, Rector of the Tashkent Pharmaceutical Institute, discussed Hungarian-Uzbek cooperation with Semmelweis University. The institution first approached the university in 2021 for possible cooperation, but no concrete areas were identified and no cooperation was formalized back then. However, during the recent meeting, representatives of both institutions were open to the possibility of cooperation, so the identification of concrete areas of partnership could start in the near future. At the end of the meeting, the representatives of the two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
