The Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Musée d’Orsay and the Musée de l’Orangerie in Paris, will host a major exhibition of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s paintings, focusing on figure drawings, from September 22. Tickets for the exhibition are on sale now, according to the museum, reports turizmus.com.
Following exhibitions of major artists of the French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist periods (Monet and his friends in 2003; Van Gogh in Budapest, 2006; Cezanne and the Past, 2012; From Cezanne to Malevich, 2021), this year the museum will focus on Renoir’s oeuvre. The reason for the choice is also supported by the fact that in 2019, the museum acquired the master’s late masterpiece Naked Woman Couchée (Femme nue Couchée (Gabrielle)), in an historic auction.
I am a figurative painter,” Pierre-Auguste Renoir said, referring to the fact that he always placed the human figure at the center of his art.
As a portrait painter, he sensitively captured the movement of faces, the glow of eyes, and the splendor of clothes.
Impressionism was a 19th-century art movement characterized by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, open composition, emphasis on accurate depiction of light in its changing qualities (often accentuating the effects of the passage of time), ordinary subject matter, unusual visual angles, and inclusion of movement as a crucial element of human perception and experience. Impressionism originated with a group of Paris-based artists whose independent exhibitions brought them to prominence during the 1870s and 1880s.
In his life portraits, he captured the everyday, cheerful interactions between characters, the new phenomena of modern life. In his nudes he celebrated the beauty of the female body, the silky glow of skin. His paintings are populated by friends, fellow artists, art lovers, and family members, who become part of a vibrant, carefree, harmonious world.
The exhibition, opening on September 22, explores Renoir’s relationship with the models who inspired his art through paintings, prints, and sculptures, in a chronological and thematic arrangement.
The exhibition, entitled Renoir – The painter and his models, will be open between September 22, 2023 and January 7, 2024.
