Two Hungarian films are making their debut at the Venice Film Festival: the feature film by Gábor Reisz, titled Explanation for Everything (Magyarázat mindenre), and Dorka Vermes’ cinematic debut, Arni, will be screened at the prestigious film festival, Magyar Nemzet reports.
The 80th Venice International Film Festival opened Wednesday night with Italian director Edoardo De Angelis’ World War II submarine drama Comandante. Gábor Reisz’s third feature, Explanation for Everything, is also on the official program, while the College Cinema section will screen Dorka Vermes’ first feature, Arni. On opening day, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to Italian director and screenwriter, Liliana Cavani.
The Competition program of 23 films includes new films by numerous American directors such as David Fincher, Sofia Coppola, Ava DuVernay, Michael Mann, Bradley Cooper, and Wes Anderson, as well as strong selections from Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The international jury for the Golden Lion Grand Prize is chaired by Damien Chazelle, Oscar winner for California Dream.
Reisz’s film Orizzonti (Horizons) will be screened in Section A of the festival. The movie paints a realistic picture of a country torn in two through the story of an 18-year-old boy’s high school graduation exam that ends in scandal.
Dorka Vermes’ first feature film, Arni, about a traveling circus handyman, was supported by the Venice Biennale and developed as part of the Biennale College Cinema program.
The Venice Film Festival features a number of movies that come close to the Oscars: eight of the 11 Oscar winners from recent years are making their Venice debuts, including Chazelle’s California Dream. “I would be surprised if David Fincher, Bradley Cooper, or Sofia Coppola were not in the running for the Oscars this year,” said Alberto Barbera, artistic director of the festival.
Fincher is in the running with the thriller The Killer, in which Michael Fassbender plays the lead role of a hit man. Cooper comes to Venice with the film Maestro, about the world-famous conductor Leonard Bernstein, whom he portrays. Coppola brings Priscilla to the gondolas’ city, based on the memoirs of Elvis Presley’s wife.

The festival will also feature new films by Woody Allen, Luc Besson, and Roman Polanski. Besson with his new film DogMan, Allen with his first French-language work Coup de Chance, and Polanski with his comedy The Palace. The 80th Venice International Film Festival will close on September 9.
