Fábián Marozsán defeated Richard Gasquet of France in five sets in the first round of the US Open tennis tournament on Monday.
The Hungarian, ranked 92nd in the world, played his first US Open match against the 37-year-old Frenchman (55th), who was previously ranked seventh as a career-best in the ATP rankings.
In the match, the bookmakers had initially favored Gasquet,
but 23-year-old Marozsán controlled the first two sets, hitting the shots, and winning both in a smooth 57 minutes.
The Hungarian had a chance to serve for the match in the third set at 5:3, but lost his service game first and then, despite having two match points as a receiver, was beaten in the tie-break. The fourth period followed almost the same scenario: Marozsán had the chance to serve out the match at 5:4, and after failing to win again, the Frenchman won.

The decisive set brought a new turn of events as the Hungarian athlete did not show his disappointment of losing the third and fourth sets. He played more accurate and efficient tennis again and celebrated victory after 3 hours, 21 minutes.
Marozsán served 15 aces in the match, Gasquet 13. The Hungarian’s next opponent will also be a French player, 22nd ranked Adrian Mannarino.
“I got excited about the situation and I was afraid he was going to turn it around. (…) It was hard to play such a long, hard-fought match after my injury, but I am happy to be here, even more happy to win,” noted Marozsán.
“At the end of the match, I was cramping a lot, but I tried to show that everything was okay and I did. Then, when I won the first two points, I felt Gasquet let go a bit and I could close the match as a receiver. That is important because I felt I might not last much longer,” concluded the winner.
There is one more Hungarian player in the US Open to cheer for, Márton Fucsovics (ranked 57th). The news just came that in the first round Fucsovics beat Sebastian Korda of the USA in five sets after 4 hours 26, minutes of play. Unfortunately, among the women, Panna Udvardy lost the match to Australian Alja Tomljanovic.
