The heat record for the early morning on Saturday in Budapest was broken: the temperature on János Hill dropped to just 24.6 degrees Celsius, setting a new record for the capital and the country, the National Meteorological Service announced, Magyar Nemzet writes.
As it turned out, the national and capital record for the highest minimum temperature was also broken that day. So far, the daily maximum temperatures in 2011, were 23.4 degrees Celsius in Budapest, and 24.5 degrees Celsius in Szeged.
It was also reported that although no new daily maximum temperature record was set on Saturday, the 38.6 degrees measured in Csongrád-Csanád county in the south matched the highest maximum temperature recorded in 1992.
According to the preliminary data, the seasonal record and the daily record of 39.5 degrees Celsius was broken in Békés County, southern Hungary on Sunday, the national weather service announced on its Facebook page.
However, the end of the heat wave is already in sight. The frontal system that will provide cooler weather will arrive with showers and thunderstorms, and the wind may be strong in places at the beginning of the week.
According to meteorologists, the mostly sunny, cloudy, and dry weather will continue until late Monday afternoon, but after that clouds will become denser in the Transdanubian region and in the center of the country. Showers and thunderstorms may develop, and can be heavy in some places.
On Tuesday, the sun will appear for a few hours under heavy cloud cover. Rain, showers, and thunderstorms are expected in many parts of the country. Winds from southerly directions will increase in places and become gusty during thunderstorms. Lows will range between 15 and 23 degrees Celsius, and highs between 24 and 37 degrees Celsius.
On the last weekend of summer, the weather was perfect for swimming, which is why many people decided to enjoy the hot hours in Lake Balaton. There were also a number of events across the country to bid farewell to the summer, such as the Savaria Historical Carnival in western Hungary, the Strand Festival on the shores of Lake Balaton, the Youth Days in Szeged in southern Hungary, and of course, the final days of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
