The renovation of the southern Hungarian Szeged-Röszke border railway line No. 136 has been ongoing since the beginning of August. A local news portal of Csongrád-Csanád county noted that the renovation of the railway line has been in progress since October 2021, reports Magyar Nemzet.
After the modernization, passenger traffic can once again resume, and instead of the current 60 km/h, trains will be able to travel at the speed of 80-120 km/h.
However, as of June 30 of this year, the contractor V–Híd Construction Zrt., suspended the renovation work indefinitely due to technical and engineering problems. The letter instructed the subcontractors to take the necessary measures to preserve the structure, protect assets, and ensure accident prevention and safety by 12 a.m. on July 3. They then withdrew completely from the site.
Work has started again, and the platform roof has already been completed in Röszke (border crossing town in Southern Hungary). According to Péter Szijjártó, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in the autumn
passenger traffic will start on the new Szeged-Subotica railway line in the autumn, and is expected to open on October 23.
The aim is to make one of the busiest border crossings in Europe, between Röszke and Horgoš (village in Vojvodina), one of the most modern and sophisticated road crossings in Europe. Passenger services will be operated by one Hungarian and one Serbian two-car diesel train, while train services will be limited to six international freight trains a day.
