Watch Out for High Temperatures: Heat Alert Issued Until Thursday

Hungary Today 2023.08.23.

The heat is intensifying, the days are getting increasingly hotter in Hungary, especially in the central and southern counties, with temperatures of up to 37 degrees Celsius. A second level warning has been issued for these areas, and a heat alert is in force until midnight on Thursday, prompting the authorities to urge everyone to be extra cautious. Cooling of temperature is not expected before the end of the week, Hirado.hu reports.

The thermometer in Debrecen’s main square in eastern Hungary showed 26 degrees Celsius early on Tuesday morning. During the day, most people took shelter in the shade, and are also taking care to protect themselves from the sun. In such extreme temperatures, fountains and outdoor drinking fountains are popular as well as ice cream. In the hot weather, increased water consumption is essential, and beaches are also popular among those wanting a refreshing experience.

A second-level heat alert is currently in force throughout the country.

Persistent high temperatures are hard on the body, the authorities warn. Experts are therefore urging people to stay in shade and air-conditioned rooms between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. and to avoid strenuous physical work during the hottest hours.

It is advised that no one should leave children or pets in a vehicle parked in the blazing sun, as it can heat up to 50-60 degrees Celsius in just a few minutes. Authorities also asked that fires in forests should only be lit in designated fireplaces to prevent outdoor fires, and only if there is no ban on lighting fires in the county. Those going to a beach are advised to stay in the shade and use high-factor sunscreen.

The World Athletics Championships’ Wednesday program has also had to be changed due to the heat alert.

According to the organizers on Tuesday, the weather conditions are forecast to be unsuitable for the women’s 5000m preliminary race on Wednesday at 11.10am – with temperatures expected to be above 30 degrees Celsius. Thus, the event will be held on Wednesday at 7pm with Hungarian athlete Viktoria Wagner-Gyürkés in the field.

Due to the change, the 200m heats will start earlier on Wednesday morning: women at 11:20 instead of 12:05 and men at 12:15 instead of 12:50. The former will be contested by Alexa Sulyán and Boglárka Takács, the latter by Zoltán Wahl from Hungary.
