Hungary’s biggest bridge project is on schedule. The bridge connecting Bács-Kiskun and Tolna counties is slowly taking its final shape, reports Világgazdaság.
According to the latest information, the installation of the embankment bridges on both the Kalocsa (Bács-Kiskun County) and Paks (Tolna County) bridge branches is more than 50 percent complete, and the last embankment bridge is expected to be lifted at the end of 2023, writes a local news portal on the construction works of the Kalocsa Danube Bridge.
The lengthening of the bridge structure on the right bank has recently been completed and the masonry work has started. Structural work has also begun on the reinforced concrete frame structure for the treatment road on top of the right bank flood protection embankment and the separate level connection to road 512.
After two unsuccessful tenders, the selection of the designer for the Kalocsa-Paks Danube bridge was successful at the third attempt. On 27 May 2020, it was announced that Duna Aszfalt Kft. will carry out the construction phase of the development.

István Wunderlich, project manager of the company Duna Aszfalt responsible for the installation stressed recently that
the fans of the road bridge are becoming increasingly spectacular.
He noted that the fifth pier, rising 40 meters above the average Danube water level, now has four levels of 16 inclined cables to support the load of the free-standing bridge, while on the sixth pier, the experts have stretched three levels of 12 inclined cables. In this phase, the main supporting structure of the Kalocsa branch of the bridge extends more than 62 meters from the abutment, while the Paks branch extends exactly one meter, or more than 57 meters, above the international shipping route, that will remain in uninterrupted operation throughout the project.
István Wunderlich noted that the stone dams to divert the water of the Danube into the new riverbed on both the upstream and downstream sides of the new Danube bridge have also been completed. The purpose of these diversion dams is to divert the main river flow in a direction favorable to the new bridge, reducing the load on the new bridge piers. The structure, consisting of two floodplain bridges of almost a kilometer in length and a hinged bridge between them, reached its highest point at the end of April this year.
The project is being carried out by Duna Aszfalt at a cost of HUF 91.9 billion (EUR 238.8 million).
The bridge, as well as the 512 and 5124 roads connecting the bridge to the surrounding settlements and the M6 motorway, are being built by the Hungarian road and bridge construction company in two sub-projects. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2024.
