Ferencváros recorded a dominant 6-1 win over Maltese side Hamrun Spartans in the third round of the Conference League qualifiers in the first match of the first leg on Thursday. The rematch, promising to be only a formality, will take place in a week’s time at the Groupama Arena in Budapest.
The Hungarian champions got off to an excellent start, with Abu Fani scoring a superb goal from nearly 30 yards in the 3rd minute. The home side came out in force after the goal, but the Ferencváros defense – led by Dibusz in goal – confidently saved their attempts.
The second half was all about Ferencváros again, with the Hungarian Green and Whites creating several promising chances, but the scoreline remained the same. After the turnaround, Ferencváros quickly settled the match, with Barnabás Varga scoring three times and Zachariassen once in 20 minutes.
The home side pushed hard for a consolation, which they got through Montebello in the 89th minute, but almost immediately after that, Ferencváros’ midfield Owusu scored from an attack to set up the final score.
“Of course we are very happy with the big win and I am especially happy with the three goals. We went into the game with a good mentality and we achieved what we wanted. We want to win in front of our own fans in the return leg. We did not play badly in the first half, but in the second half we moved the ball faster, that might have been the key”, said Barnabás Varga to M1 news channel.
On Thursday evening, another Hungarian football team was also involved in the Conference League qualifiers, DVSC from Debrecen played against Rapid Wien in Austria.
Interestingly, this match had some connection to Ferencváros, since Hungarian football lovers have known for some time that the Austrian club and Ferencváros fans are good friends.
This was demonstrated in the live image of the match between Rapid and Austria, which you can see in the video below, where the Fradi crest appeared on the live image of the fans, reports Nemzeti Sport.
