According to a Spanish newspaper, German pensioners are increasingly choosing the region around Lake Balaton as their retirement destination. Hungary is already more popular than certain Spanish regions, such as Costa Brava, Mandiner reports.
The Spanish online news portal ABC recently reported that the number of German pensioners moving to Hungary has increased by 25 percent. The article, citing an unnamed German newspaper, said that Lake Balaton and its surroundings are a “new paradise for right-wing pensioners.”
The news is significant for Spaniards because German pensioners have so far preferred to move to Costa Brava, a coastal region in the northeast part of the country.
However, now they seem to prefer Lake Balaton and its surroundings for their retirement years. Most of the pensioners surveyed justified their decision by saying that they could live comfortably on their German pensions in Hungary. Another important factor was the avoidance of the migrant influx in Germany and the fact that the elderly are treated more humanely in Hungarian retirement homes.
It was already reported by Hungary Today in the spring that
in just a few years, the number of German pensioners living in Hungary has increased by a quarter.
According to a report by Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk (MDR), the towns of Keszthely and Marcali around the Balaton area are very popular among German pensioners. The report also said that Germans settling in Hungary have already organized local groups (Stammtisch) in 20 settlements in the Balaton area. Furthermore, there are already more than 14,700 German pensioners applying for their pensions in Hungary. Five years ago, the figure was 11,700.
