A JAS-39 Gripen fighter-bomber

The Szentgyörgyi Dezső 101st Airborne Brigade of the Hungarian Defense Forces presented the Hungarian spotter community with a spectacular training flight this summer – reports Honvédelem.hu.

On August 2, in Kecskemét, nearly twenty avid fans witnessed the technical preparation, take-off, and landing of JAS-39 Gripen fighter-bombers three times from dusk till dawn. The event was, however, mainly about the preparation of the crews and technical staff. In order to keep the pilots’ skills up to date, particularly to ensure that they are able to perform the 24-hour air defense standby duty, training flights of this type are carried out several times a year.

Major Viktor Langó, Acting Deputy Commander of the Szentgyörgyi Dezső 101st Airborne Brigade, who himself flew in the third rotation, stressed that in the past, when aircraft were less instrumented, night visibility was more difficult.

In fighter flying, we do a lot of things by flying by sight, which is why we have to practice a lot, as we have to be able to do the same things at night as we do during the day,”

he explained.

Major Langó added that what made the occasion special was that it was open to spotters. “These are the civilians who come with serious photographic equipment, without sparing their time and money, to capture some of the moments of the training, and we thank them for their work,” he said.
