The M6 will not end in nothingness, as construction on the Croatian side could start this year, reports business website, Világgazdaság.
Construction of the continuation of the M6 on the other side of the border could begin as early as August, after the Croatian authorities successfully completed the tender for the construction of the missing five kilometers of the highway – so it is not a dead end, as reported in the Hungarian press. This will create a high-speed link between Budapest and Osijek by 2025.
Last week, Telex.hu published an article in which the author wrote that the M6 freeway under construction has reached the Croatian-Hungarian border, but since then, nothing has happened on the southern neighbor’s side, the M6 “leads to nowhere.”
Although, according to the article, the Croatian Ministry of Transport has been unsuccessfully contacted to find out when the tender for the construction will be published, the Croatian press reported two weeks ago that both Strabag and Osijek Koteks submitted valid bids in the tender for the construction of the missing five-kilometer section of the freeway from Beli Manastir to the Hungarian border.
According to Index.hr, the evaluation of the bids and the selection of the contractor are underway, thus construction could start in August once the contract is signed.
Construction permits have been issued for the five-kilometer section and work is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.
By then, the M6 will be completed in its entirety, so it won’t be long before it is possible to travel on the highway from Budapest to Osijek, or beyond. The ongoing work will create a total of 300 kilometers of continuous highway between Budapest and the Bosnian border. The Bosniaks are undoubtedly behind schedule, with only 93 kilometers of the 350 kilometers of the new road completed so far, but recently work seems to have picked up there as well. This fall, one of the most beautiful bridges in the world south of Mostar, and the connected 20-kilometer section could be opened to traffic.
This is particularly good news for lovers of the Dalmatian and Montenegrin coasts, who until now could only reach their destination via the highway with a long detour of several hundred kilometers through Croatia. The Pan-European Corridor Vc, together with the M6 freeway in Hungary and the A10 and A5 freeways in Croatia and A1 in Bosnia, will connect Budapest with the Croatian port of Ploče. The total length is 635 kilometers, of which around 400 kilometers will be completed by 2025.
