The first group of 400 Ukrainian children affected by the Russian-Ukrainian war and their accompanying parents, who will be spending their holidays in Hungary under the government’s decision, left Uzhhorod (Ungvár, today’s Ukraine) for Miskolc in northern Hungary on Monday.
The children and their parents are from Zaporizhzhia county, near the front line. After a week’s rest in Transcarpathia, they will spend two weeks in Miskolc.
Two weeks ago, Viktor Mikita, governor of Transcarpathia, asked for help in sending Ukrainian children from the war zone to camps in Hungary. In response to his request,
the Hungarian government has decided to provide two weeks of camping for 400 children.
József Bacskai, the Consul General in Uzhhorod, recalled that last year more than 7,000 Ukrainian children had holidayed in Hungary, and groups of Ukrainian children are now vacationing in several settlements under various cooperation programs. The diplomat said that
the costs of the holidays of the children and their companions “are covered by the Hungarian people, and we hope that these children will return home with good memories of Hungary”.
First Deputy Governor of Transcarpathia Miroslav Bileckiy stressed that the holiday was being organized with the help of Hungarian partners. He said that “thanks to close cooperation with European friends, the leadership of Transcarpathia will continue to send children on holiday abroad, including from other regions of the country”.
The group will be accommodated at the Miskolc Law Enforcement Technical School. The children and their escorts will visit the sights of Miskolc and its surroundings, as well as Nyíregyháza, Debrecen and Eger.
