Brussels is indulging in corruption, and the champions of the rule of law in the bloc’s headquarters should first sweep the floor in front of their own gates instead of lecturing member states, Balázs Hidvéghi, Fidesz MEP said in Strasbourg on Thursday.
In his speech during the debate in the European Parliament’s plenary session on the annual report on public access to documents for the period 2019-2021, Balázs Hidvéghi said: suitcases full of money, mysteriously missing text messages, gifts worth millions, endless number of corruption cases in Brussels.
This is why we Hungarians say that the champions of the rule of law in Brussels should first sweep the floor in front of their own gates instead of lecturing member states,”
he said.
He continued by saying that the way in which the EU institutions, including the European Parliament and the European Commission, abide by their own rules is very rarely discussed, there was no talk about the state of the rule of law in these institutions. This is rarely mentioned, despite the fact that “we have witnessed the biggest corruption scandal of all time in recent months”. The vice-president and a member of the EU parliament were taken away in handcuffs, he recalled.
He pointed out, that soon afterwards, it emerged that senior officials of the European Commission had also widely abused their power and position, adding that they had accepted gifts and other financial benefits in an unacceptable and indefensible manner.
He recalled that the biggest scandal was the purchase of vaccines, which he said was allegedly made by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, by text message. Later, these text messages, and only these, disappeared from her phone. This is scandalous, he stated.
There is no legal basis or credibility for the European institutions to lecture others on the rule of law and the fight against corruption until they put their own house in order. In his speech, Balázs Hidvéghi said that they should account for the money and obey the rules.
