Central Europe Must Not Pay for the West’s Migration Debacle

MTI-Hungary Today 2023.07.13.

Member states must continue to build legal migration routes and reflect on the redistribution of refugees, as this is the only way to tackle migrant smuggling and manage migration effectively, the European Commissioner for Home Affairs said in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

Speaking during a debate in the European Parliament plenary on the need for EU action for the search and rescue of migrants in the Mediterranean, Ylva Johansson said that the deaths in the Mediterranean Sea should be a reminder that the EU’s priority must be to save lives.

The best response to ensure that lives are saved is to take solidarity measures and to allow legal migration,

the Commissioner said, adding that partnership agreements should be concluded to establish labor migration.

In her speech, Ylva Johansson also stressed the need for common EU rules to combat migrant smuggling, which “is not a ticket to Europe, but a ticket to death”. She stressed that EU and national coastguards must act in accordance with international law and that any violence is unacceptable. The EU must also help member states in search and rescue with all its means, she added.

Speaking to Hungarian journalists on the issue, Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch recalled that the EU’s Home Affairs Council recently decided that a mandatory resettlement quota would be included in the new EU migration legislation. This would lead to the establishment of migrant camps.

Tamás Deutsch emphasized that

the government says no to mandatory quotas and migrant camps, pointing out that in the last half decade, Hungary has prevented one million illegal migrants from entering the EU.

The politician highlighted that illegal migrants let in by Western countries are now an unbearable burden in those countries. According to him, that is why the states in Central and Eastern Europe are now being forced to “shoulder” the problem of the illegal migrants the West let in.

The well-functioning Hungarian model of processing applications for EU entry outside the EU should be applied. If the decision is positive, the person concerned can enter Europe. If this could be implemented, there would not be the current problem of millions of migrants flooding into Europe, added Tamás Deutsch.
