A new world-class facility has been added to the brand new National Athletics Center, the main venue of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest in August, reports Magyar Nemzet.
After the inauguration of the 35,000-seat stadium in June and a month and a half before the start of the World Championships on August 19, the training center of the complex has been completed. This will be one of the main venues, warm-up, and training grounds for the World Championships, where more than 200,000 athletes from over 200 countries will arrive and prepare for the competition.
The National Athletics Center, the new home of Hungarian athletics, is the most modern athletics facility in Central and Eastern Europe. The brownfield site, previously blighted by polluting industrial activity, consists of a 35,000-seat stadium with temporary stands, a green and wooded leisure park, a pedestrian and cycle bridge linking Ferencváros (9th District of Budapest) to Csepel (21st District of Budapest), and the newly completed Athletics Training Center.
The training center will host national and international stars, world and Olympic champions, world record holders and their coaches, trainers, and support staff for the World Championships from August 19 to 27. After the warm-up, they will cross the pedestrian-cycle bridge in electric trolleys to the stadium, where the races will take place.
The track, built at the northern tip of Csepel, will provide the perfect venue for athletics superheroes to train and prepare.
A time-measuring room, changing rooms, offices, sports storage, and a grandstand with a capacity of a few hundred people will also be part of the warm-up area. It will also include a 150-meter long climb, an important training area for sprinters.
The biggest feature of the training center is the indoor throwing ring, a rarity in the world, which can be used in winter and summer and from which hammer throwers and discus throwers can throw their equipment on the open grass areas.
This Friday and Saturday, the best Hungarian athletes will have their first opportunity to try out the center’s new facility at the Hungarian Championships.
