The Foundation for a Civic Hungary will establish an international prize named after John Hunyadi in 2023, with a prize of 20,000 euros, to recognize outstanding achievements that focus on the defense of the freedom and independence of European nations and the conscious embrace of the universal Christian culture that unites the peoples of the continent, the foundation announced on Tuesday.

According to their statement, the party foundation of Fidesz – Hungarian Civic Alliance is establishing an international award named after John Hunyadi (in Hungarian: Hunyadi János), one of the greatest heroes of Hungarian history, the warlord famous Europe-wide, and hero of the Siege of Nándorfehérvár (today’s Belgrade in Serbia, where Hunyadi’s troops overran the Ottoman camps, and made the Turkish retreat). The Battle of Belgrade in 1456 had significant consequences, as it stabilized the southern frontiers of the Kingdom of Hungary for more than half a century, considerably delaying the Ottoman advance in Europe.

The intention of the Foundation for a Civic Hungary is not only to draw attention to one of the greatest defenders of medieval Christian Europe, but also to honor his personal achievements in the present.

The founder wishes to promote the ideals of freedom, independence, and cooperation between equal nations, and to draw attention to the Greco-Roman traditions that define the spirituality of Europe and to the moral principles of Christian culture.

The Hunyadi János Prize is intended to recognize outstanding personalities who have fearlessly represented and upheld these values.

The founder will involve its European partners in the creation of the prize, who will be able to contribute to its establishment and annual presentation by nominating individuals.

The nomination process will be overseen by the Foundation’s Board of Trustees and the first award ceremony will take place in Brussels in autumn 2023,”

according to the statement.
