Péter Márki-Zay, president of the newly formed Everybody’s Hungary People’s Party, was a guest on public television channel M1’s program titled ’48 minutes.’ During the talk, he admitted that the opposition received US dollars to overthrow the government in last year’s campaign, Hirado.hu reported.
According to the report, former prime ministerial candidate Péter Márki-Zay said that his party is preparing for the European Parliament elections and would like to join the European People’s Party family. The television program’s host Tamás Lánczi asked the opposition politician where they hope to get votes from, since Márki-Zay has declared himself a conservative, so he is giving up the votes of left-wing citizens. Meanwhile, he has repeatedly insulted right-wing Fidesz voters. In his response, Márki-Zay has denied his earlier remarks and defended himself by saying that he only considers those who believe in Fidesz’s program as fools.
During the discussion, the issue of the opposition’s dubious foreign campaign financing was also raised. In connection with this, Márki-Zay admitted that
“the purpose of these funds and subsidies was to overthrow the most corrupt government in Hungary’s thousand-year history.”
It has been revealed during the investigation into the opposition funding that the Everybody’s Hungary Movement, linked to Márki-Zay, received 1.85 billion forints (EUR 5 million) in foreign funding through the Action for Democracy organization in the US.
As Hungary Today has reported several times before, the scandal broke a few months ago that opposition parties had received foreign funding during the election last April, and the campaign leading up to it.
According to the information that has come to light so far, the opposition could have received more than HUF 4.5 billion (EUR 12.2 million) from abroad altogether.
The sums were called micro-donations, but it soon became clear that they were of such a size that the term ‘micro-donation’ was not appropriate.
The latest stage in the scandal came just a few days ago, when it emerged that the association of Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony, the Ninety-Nine Movement Association, had received more than HUF 500 million (EUR 1.3 million).
Karácsony was also running as a candidate for prime minister in the opposition primaries, but eventually stepped back from the candidacy in favor of Márki-Zay.
According to the intelligence report, the official representative of the association, Gábor Perjés, a politician from Dialogue for Hungary – Greens, paid a total of HUF 506 million (EUR 1.3 million) into their account on nineteen occasions, most of the transactions being in foreign currency. The report states that “a total of 917,695 euros and 3,900 pounds cash payments were made to the account during the period under review.”
