After lengthy negotiations, diplomatic efforts have finally paid off: from the end of October, Hungarian airline Wizz Air will start operating three flights a week from Budapest to Cairo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó Péter said on his Facebook page on Sunday.
Szijjártó wrote that the airline has so far been unable to operate flights to the capital of Egypt because Cairo International Airport’s regulations “essentially excluded” low-cost operators from the airport.
He stressed that the issue has been on the agenda of all negotiations since 2022, asking their Egyptian partners to allow Wizz Air to land in Cairo.
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Archaeology finally issued the necessary paperwork, allowing the route to be operating from October 30.
Szijjártó emphasized that
this opens up another tourist destination and creates another economic link between the two countries.”
