This year, Rome will be the focus of the Bridges of Europe. Müpa Budapest and the Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) will hold a joint thematic festival from September 22 to 27 with popular and classical music concerts, literary evenings, and film screenings, the organizers told MTI on Thursday.
The series of events will open with a concert by Antonio Castrignano, one of the most prominent representatives of Salento music. This will be followed by a performance by the Italian jazz star Roberta Gambarini, known for her distinctive alto voice, who will perform with the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

Writer Sándor Márai’s life and work are closely linked to Italy. The writer’s works will be presented in a literary evening entitled ‘Márai’s Italy,’ with renowned guests and theater artists Nóra Földeáki and Áron Darvasi, who will listen to musical excerpts and explore the influence of the Italian way of life on the writer and his oeuvre.

The Festival’s co-organizer, the Budapest Festival Orchestra conducted by Iván Fischer, is preparing an unusual collaboration as part of the series of events. In the first part, Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. II in A major and his best-known work Hungarian Rhapsody, and in the second, one of Bartók’s best-loved works, The Miraculous Mandarin, will be performed by the Éva Duda Ensemble. Cimbalom, piano and contemporary movement theater, will also play an important role in the concerts, the statement said.
The festival will also include films related to Rome for those who want to see their favorites on the big screen, from Fellini to Woody Allen, or Sorrentino to Wyler.
The closing event will feature the orchestra of the Santa Cecilia Academy in Rome, one of the oldest musical institutions in the world since 1908, performing works inspired by Rome, from Liszt and Respighi, with the Cantemus Youth Choir and organist Alan Zsilka. Iván Fischer will conduct the evening,” according to the summary.
