Career Entrants Have Grand Ideas for Their First Salaries

Hungary Today 2023.06.22.

Young adults are mainly looking for jobs on Facebook and are expecting much higher starting salaries than last year, according to a Work Force survey. Jobseekers were looking for 350,000 forints (EUR 945) for an entry position last year, but this year they are looking for a salary between 450,000 and 600,000 forints (EUR 1,215-1,620), Világgazdaság reports.

As the data shows, the salary demands of young people have risen considerably compared to last year, and in the capital, they are even bolder in expressing their salary demands.

The most important factor for them when choosing a job is a competitive salary and flexible working hours.

The representative survey of 18 to 25-year-olds found that the majority of respondents work in the retail and consumer sector (18 percent), followed in popularity by manufacturing (14 percent). The third most popular sector was tourism and catering (11 percent), with four percent more working in this sector this year than a year ago. Compared to last year, the popularity of financial services has fallen the most – while 17 percent of respondents worked in this field in 2022, only six percent of new entrants are in that sector this year.

For intellectual jobs, entrants would be happy with a salary of up to HUF 600,000, (EUR 1,620) while the majority of people in manual jobs put their salary needs between HUF 350,000 and HUF 450,000 gross (EUR 945-1,215). However, twice as many people would like to earn between HUF 800,000 and 1 million (EUR 2,160-2,700) compared to last year.

In Budapest, the salary requirements are clearly higher: 37 percent of those surveyed would like to earn more than half a million forints (EUR 1,350) per month, and 10 percent of career entrants in the capital expect to earn more than a million forints (EUR 2,700) gross to start.

As it turns out, the majority of young jobseekers are not afraid of searching for a job that matches their qualifications and meeting the expectations of managers. When it comes to finding a job, 71 percent say they do not find it difficult to find the right job for them, and 64 percent feel that it will not be too challenging to meet employers’ expectations.
