Electricity consumption in Hungary dropped again in May, public television channel M1 reported. Meanwhile, the Turkish Stream pipeline, which has undergone annual maintenance, is once again delivering gas, so the filling of domestic storage facilities is progressing well. As a result, households are guaranteed heating and hot water even in the event of harsh winters.
Hungarians are increasingly saving on electricity, the latest figures show. In the last month of spring this year, the total gross monthly electricity consumption in Hungary was 8.6 percent lower than in May 2022.
High energy prices are the main reason for the increased savings, but investments to increase energy efficiency are also important factors.
The main driver of these improvements has been the installation of solar panels, but less electricity consumption has also been driven by more companies cutting back on their consumption.
Meanwhile, gas is coming again through the TurkStream pipeline after Russia’s annual maintenance has ended. Transit volumes are back to normal, which is particularly important given the key role of this pipeline in supplying gas to Hungary and Europe.
The TurkStream project has also contributed to the good progress in filling domestic gas storage: the volume injected already covers 37% of annual consumption, almost double the European average.
As a result, Hungarians do not have to worry about not having enough energy in winter, nor do they have to worry about families’ overheads increasing, as the protection of utility costs remains a top priority for the government, as reflected in the 2024 budget. Moreover, in order to maintain a safe and secure energy security system, a budget of HUF 1,360 billion (EUR 3.6 billion) has been planned for next year for the energy security fund.
