Air traffic started on Thursday at the Brasov (Brassó) – Ghimbav International Airport, the first greenfield project in Romania to serve Szeklerland (Székelyföld) -reported MTI.
The first aircraft, a flight of Romanian airline Tarom from Bucharest, landed Thursday morning at the airport in Ghimbav (Vidombák), a quarter of an hour’s drive from Brasov in Transylvania. Several members of the outgoing Romanian government were on board, including outgoing Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca, President of Brasov County Council Adrian Vestea, candidate for the Ministry of Development, along with Sándor Tamás, President of the Covasna County Council, and Árpád Antal, Mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy).
The new airport, inaugurated on Thursday, will serve Szeklerland, especially the nearby Covasna County, as Târgu Mures (Marosvásárhely) is the international airport closest to the region.
The municipal leaders involved have supported the project from the very beginning, and Sándor Tamás said earlier that they had also secured government support for the construction, as it was of paramount importance for them to get the airport up and running.
“A historic moment! Today our region takes wing!” wrote Árpád Antal on his social media page after the landing in Brasov.
The mayor of Sfântu Gheorghe (Sepsiszentgyörgy) said earlier that the Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport will bring the people of Háromszék County closer to the world, as it will speed up transport, which will contribute to the region’s competitiveness. He also drew attention to the fact that
the airport has Hungarian signage in addition to information texts in Romanian, English, and German.
“We are in the right place, we are at home!”, the RMDSZ politician remarked.

Adrian Vestea, who oversaw the project as President of the Brasov County Council, said that the opening of the airport was the realization of a dream of generations of Brasov residents. He especially thanked the members of the government for supporting the local initiative.
The Romanian Air Traffic Management Service (ROMATSA) has so far approved 12-hour operations for the airport, restricted to 7am to 7pm. The Romanian airline Dan Air has requested that the restriction be lifted as soon as possible.
As previously announced, Dan Air flights are available to Munich, Nuremberg, Barcelona, Brussels, London, and Stuttgart. Hungarian-owned Wizz Air also operates flights from the airport to London and Dortmund, while
the much-anticipated Budapest flight is still to come, but charter flights to well-known foreign resorts will soon be available.
Brasov airport is the first airport in Romania to be built as a greenfield project after the change of regime in 1989, and has been awaited by the region’s residents for 18 years. Construction started in 2020. The investment, partly financed by the Brasov County Municipality which owns the project, has cost more than €100 million.
