A fictitious enemy had invaded Germany. In response, NATO has triggered Article V, calling for the collective defense of their NATO ally. Welcome to Europe’s largest air power exercise since World War II, Air Defender 2023.
The massive air exercise that started on June 12 is taking place all across Europe, 25 nations are participating in the two-week initiative. The exercise has been years in the planning—well before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reported Airandspaceforces.com. Some 10,000 personnel and 250 aircraft from NATO nations and Japan are participating.
American teams are bringing their F-35s, F-15s, F-16s, while European air forces are bringing fighters and other aircraft such as Eurofighters, Tornados, and the Hungarian Air Force’s Gripens.
