Hungarians in the European Union are the most aware of what intellectual property is, and only nine percent of Hungarian consumers are hesitant to identify counterfeit products, according to the latest study by the European Union Intellectual Property Office.
The study looked at consumer attitudes towards counterfeit goods, among other things.
Hungarian consumers are ahead in that few of them deliberately buy illegal products, with only nine percent having bought such products. This figure was 26% in Denmark and the Netherlands, 31% in Bulgaria, and 72% in Romania.
When it comes to illegal content available online, only 24 percent of Danes said they considered it acceptable to buy content illegally from the internet for personal use, compared to 58 percent of Slovaks, and 56 percent of Slovenians. Among Hungarian respondents, the figure was 54%.
The analysis also showed that at the EU level, 83 percent of respondents said they understood the concept of intellectual property well or very well.
However, understanding varies significantly between countries, with Hungary and Portugal leading the way with 92 percent respectively, compared to 49 percent in Denmark and 47 percent in Sweden.
Péter Lábody, Deputy President of the Hungarian Intellectual Property Office, said in a statement in connection with the survey that respect for intellectual property rights is of paramount importance for inventors and creators, as it is also part of their livelihood. In all forums, the authority stresses the importance of protecting intellectual property and of taking joint action against counterfeiting and online piracy.
