Dog Injured in Ukrainian Battlefield Continues as Police Canine in Budapest

Budapest Police Headquarters (BRFK) has adopted a German shepherd named “Rambo” who was rescued from Ukraine a few months ago with serious injuries.

Even the U.S. news outlet Fox News reported the heartwarming story of the severely injured three-year-old German shepherd. Due to a rocket attack in Eastern Ukraine, the right side of Rambo’s face was completely wounded. The shrapnel from the rocket blew away pieces of his skull while damaging his jaw and mangling his right ear. He underwent a life-saving surgery and shortly after started his rehabilitation and training in Hungary, thanks to Violetta Kovács, head of the German Shepherd Rescue Foundation.

Rambo spent eight months at the rehabilitation center, where his jaw was reconstructed, his right ear amputated and several teeth removed. He underwent training to be socialized with other dogs, Violetta Kovacs said, however it was clear from the start that he adores children, which might indicate a career for him as a partner in therapy sessions.

BRFK Budapest Police Headquarters said in a Facebook post that that after knowing Rambo’s story, they thought that Rambo deserved a chance with them after all he has been through. Gyula Deskó, Head of the BRFK’s Criminal Dog Service, together with Lieutenant Colonel Mária Stein, Senior Detective Chief Inspector, took the German shepherd’s further care into her own hands. They said that

since we do not know his background, his abilities, his malleability, we primarily intend to give him a “community” role, an alternative service.

Due to his fate and his “differences,” he could participate in prevention programs aiming to educate schoolchildren that being a bit unique or having a condition is not a crime or a peculiarity to be negatively highlighted.
