Péter Szijjártó: Global Security Is on the Line

Global security is at greater risk than at any time in the last seventy years, and never before has the threat of terrorism and the risk of a third world war been so serious, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó warned in Riyadh on Thursday.

According to a statement issued by the ministry, the minister stressed at a meeting of the US-Saudi co-chair of the global coalition fighting the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization that was held in the US, that the risk of a third world war had never been so high, that there had never been such an “open and shameless reference to nuclear capabilities,” and that the terrorist threat was more serious than ever.

He stressed Hungary’s contribution to the success of the fight against IS, continuing to support the most threatened communities to avoid displacement.

Hungary will support sixteen development programs in Iraq and Syria in the coming period to renovate and operate schools, run hospitals, and run various church, humanitarian, and social institutions that are important for the communities, so that these communities are not displaced, he said.
He mentioned that the total value of these programs is 1.6 billion forints, but Hungary is also maintaining a military presence in the region, with 134 Hungarian soldiers currently participating in a training mission in Iraq as part of the coalition against IS.

“In addition, we support the UN’s efforts to ensure that Islamic State fighters cannot escape accountability, in other words, to shatter the myth of impunity and make it clear that anyone who commits an act of terrorism, who oppresses a community, who forces a community to leave their homes, commits a serious crime and will be punished with the punishment they deserve,” he highlighted.
He added that in this context, we must focus on defeating IS, because in recent years we have been led to believe that this has been done, but the jihadist group is rearing its head again and again in different parts of the world, including Africa, following the Middle East. He said that

we know very well that terrorism is not just a threat in itself, the real threat is that terrorism and mass migration are in a vicious circle.

He pointed out that the higher the terrorist threat, the greater the chances of increased immigration pressure in Europe, and that our country is facing migration flows immediately after the Western Balkan route has become the primary route.
“Therefore, counter-terrorism is a key issue for Hungary,” he said, adding that Europe today would be unable to tackle two security challenges at the same time, as the consequences of the war in Ukraine are still very serious.

The Minister reiterated that global security is more at risk today than at any time in the last 70 years. He stated that

the overt reference to nuclear capabilities is stronger than at any time in the last seventy years and the global threat of terrorism is more serious than at any time in the last seventy years.

“So we need to join forces to ensure that we have peace in our eastern neighborhood and no migratory pressure from the south, and that requires victory against terrorist organizations,” he concluded.
