In the European Parliament, Hungarian rectors, researchers and students gave their views in a public hearing on the European Commission’s discriminatory exclusion of universities from the Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe programs.

In a statement, Fidesz MEP Andrea Bocskor said that “Erasmus+ and Horizon Europe are the flagship programs of the European Union, in which hundreds of thousands of Hungarian students and teachers have participated over the past 30 years, and there has never been a problem with their accounting or the use of EU funds”. The MEP referred to the fact that the European Commission suspended the participation of universities run by public foundations in EU programs earlier this year.

Kinga Gál, Chair of the Hungarian governing party Fidesz EP Group, pointed out that “the aim of the Fidesz delegation to the European Parliament during the series of untruthful attacks on our country in recent years was clear: to provide credible, fact-based, first-hand information on the issues involved”.

It is a legitimate expectation that serious, discriminatory and baseless decisions that exclude two-thirds of Hungarian universities, including some 180,000 students from the Erasmus and Horizon programs, should be based on facts,”

she said. “It is unacceptable that Brussels, which blackmails the Hungarian government for its pro-peace, anti-migration and anti-gender stance, punishes the innocent academic world,” she underlined.
