This year, the Museum of Applied Arts will again organize the Art Nouveau Festival with free programs. The main venue of the series of events, which will run from Tuesday to Saturday, will be the Ráth György Villa in Budapest, where 600 works of art from the museum’s unique Art Nouveau collection will be on display.
On Tuesday afternoon between 5:00 and 6:30pm, György Németh, chief curator of the Museum of Applied Arts, gave a lecture at the György Ráth Villa in Budapest, where the work of the world-famous Italian furniture designer Carlo Bugatti (1856-1940) is presented. The exhibition entitled Our Art Nouveau in Ráth Villa is the first in Hungary to feature furniture designed by the artist. Bugatti developed his distinctive toolkit of furniture by exploring, rethinking, and redefining traditional techniques of creating, and he was a bold innovator in the materials he used, the statement said.

The Museum of Applied Arts highlights that on Thursday from 6 to 7:30pm at the Scruton Community Space in Veres Pálné Street, the presentation of Zoltán Cselovszki, Director General of the Museum of Applied Arts, entitled “Building ceramics: functionality and decorative qualities in the context of the planned renovation of the Museum of Applied Arts building” will be held. The Museum of Applied Arts will present the elements of the planned reconstruction of the emblematic museum building in a series of extraordinary exhibitions, the first of which will open in 2023.
On Saturday, between 1:00 and 3:00pm, visitors can take part in the city walk entitled Materials and Forms – Art Nouveau in Terézváros, led by Zsófia Hutvágner, museologist of the Museum of Applied Arts. This year’s walk will explore the architecture of Terézváros and the use of materials in the Art Nouveau period. The walk will also include the fabulous facades of the Lindenbaum houses, considered the first of Budapest’s Art Nouveau buildings.

The Art Nouveau Festival, which runs from Tuesday to Saturday, will also include a lecture entitled Iron men and Iron Ladies in Art Nouveau – Metal Art in Europe at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, a guided tour of Art Nouveau books, and a thematic tour of the Zsolnay factory’s lustrous mosaics entitled The First Blush of Dawn. The festival program also includes a yoga session, a picture framing workshop, a face painting program “Be an art nouveau artwork yourself,” and a museum education session entitled “Tactile Art Nouveau – The Art of Touch.”
World Art Nouveau Day has been celebrated every year on June 10 since 2013, on the initiative of the Hungarian government. The day is linked to two famous turn-of-the-century architects: Ödön Lechner, who died in 1914, and Antoni Gaudí in 1926. World Art Nouveau Day is also part of the official program of the international Art Nouveau organization Réseau Art Nouveau Network (RANN), which has been joined by participating institutions around a central theme every year since 2017.
