The new measure came into force in Hungary on June 1, with supermarkets being obliged to advertise promotions.
According to Világgazdaság, the measure is a novelty, as there has never been a similar one in Hungary, but the move seems justified in order to bring down record-high food inflation. The original plan is for the measure to be temporary, until September 30.
The compulsory scheme is based on weekly sales periods, normally from 00:00 on Thursday to 24:00 on Wednesday of the following week.
The trader is obliged to offer at least one product per category during the promotional period at a price at least 10 percent lower than the lowest gross retail price applied by the trader during the previous 30 days.
