According to the MEPs, the country is unfit to take over the Council's rotating presidency. Continue reading
Polish and Hungarian governing party politicians have reacted to a new European Parliament resolution that would strip Hungary of the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2024.
Responding to a journalist’s question on the EP resolution proposing the suspension of Hungary’s EU Council presidency for the second half of next year, Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki expressed hope that it was “just a kind of ‘shouting’ by the EP, which he said would be in open violation of the most important form of EU rules: the founding treaties.
Such a destruction of the functioning of the European Union is not only a dead end, but a road to the abyss,”
Morawiecki said.
Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga pointed out on her Facebook page that MEPs were not interested in another debate on Hungary on Wednesday. Her photo shows that the benches were almost empty. “This is how many MEPs were interested in the drama of the so-called parliamentary debate condemning Hungary,” she wrote.
According to Varga, the left-wing MEPs voted on the proposal condemning Hungary in vain because “preparatory work is already well underway, next week we will be hosting senior Council staff who will be training Hungarian leaders on how to chair meetings, preparing them for our EU presidency in the second half of 2024.”
Fidesz MEP Balázs Hidvéghi explained the result of the vote by saying that “the pro-war left-wing MEPs cannot accept that Hungary is on the side of peace and rejects incitement to war,” alluding to Hungary’s refusal to export arms to war-torn Ukraine.
The pressure on Hungary continues and intensifies,”
he added.
