The three-month long program started today, June 1st in Békéscsaba, a town South-East of the capital Budapest, with the local folk dance students’ show. The series of festivals will run until the end of August, at the cultural and artistic experience site now called Munkácsy Quarter (after the world renowned painter, Mihály Munkácsy, who started his career in Békéscsaba).
Every year the city’s cultural institutions join forces to organize summer programs here. A nature-film about Hungary’s wild water history will also be screened on opening night, and visitors will also be able to attend a two-man stand-up comedy show.
The courtyard of the City Hall in Békéscsaba will host pop and rock music concerts in the course of the summer under the title “City Hall Evenings”, having invited as many “stars” as possible to the stage, performing contemporary hits as well as rock ballads, like The Beatles tribute concert.

Theater shows will include the Jókai Theatre of Békéscsaba’s highly successful performance of Ancona Lovers, featuring evergreen Italian hits from the 1970s, in the main square, or Marc Camoletti’s comedy Happy Birthday. Musicals and retro-shows will be performed by Hungarian artists.
The International Puppet Festival, as always, promises a program full of surprises and excitement for children and adults alike, with puppeteers arriving from all over the world. Terrence McNally’s romantic comedy Frankie and Johnnie, (Ketten egyedül), on which the screenplay the movie by the same title starring Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer is based, will be brought to the public by the duo of the Art-Theater Company.
The Munkácsy Mihály Museum will hold temporary exhibitions of local artists, but amateurs can also learn from the artists in the joint creative program “Learning from the Masters”.
The exhibition “From Pest to Arad, from Euphoria to Lethargy”, dealing with the events of 1848-49 anti-Habsburg revolution and their implications for the county, will be open until July 2nd. In connection with this, on June 8th, an evening of music and poetry will be organized under the name Petőfi Café, paying tribute to Sándor Petőfi, one of the greatest heroes of the Hungarian Revolution and War of Independence, who was born, as it happens, 200 years ago. The Békés County Library will host Japanese Days between 1-3 June, and the 94th Békéscsaba Book Week will be held on 8-9 June.

During the summer, the series of City Walks will continue in the Munkácsy district, with a concert animated by Munkácsy paintings on 24 June, and a live reading on “the phenomenon of contemporary literature”, featuring blues-tinged live music, on the 21st of July.
