Gyula Tellér, advisor to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and a former member of the parliament, has died at the age of 88.
“Gyula Tellér (1934-2023), who put his knowledge and unfailing moral sense at the service of the nation in order to understand the deeper and higher context of our lives, has passed away,” wrote former Minister of Human Resources and Reformed Bishop Zoltán Balog on Facebook.
Tellér was a member of the parliament during the regime change and won a seat on the national list of the SZDSZ in the 1990 parliamentary elections. He did not run in the next election in 1994, and left the SZDSZ in the same year, Mandiner recalled.
In 1995, he became one of the founders of the Society of Hungarian Civic Democrats and in 1996 a member of the board of the Hungarian Civic Cooperation Association. Between 1996 and 1998, he was a Fidesz delegate to the Board of Trustees of the MTV Public Foundation.
During the first Orbán government (1998-2002), he worked as head of the political analysis department of the Prime Minister’s Office. In 1999 he was appointed Scientific Director of the 20th Century Institute. Between 2000 and 2005, he was an invited lecturer at Pázmány Péter Catholic University. In 2005, he was appointed as a contract staff member of the National Radio and Television Board. In the 2006 parliamentary elections, he was re-elected from the Fidesz-KDNP national list and became a member of the Fidesz parliamentary group, the Culture and Press Committee.
Since 2010, he was an advisor to Viktor Orbán. The politician was 88 years old.
Our master and our friend is gone. He left us two legacies: be brave and be faithful,”
the prime minister wrote on Facebook.
