The headquarters of the International Swimming Federation will move to Budapest from Lausanne, Switzerland, if the agreement is approved by the organization’s congress, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó announced on Friday.

The minister said that an agreement had been signed with Hussain al-Musallam, president of the International Swimming Federation, on the relocation of the organization’s headquarters to Budapest, and that the unanimous decision of the board on the matter could be finalized by the congress.
He underlined that Hungary plays a prominent role in world swimming, not only because Hungarian athletes regularly win gold medals at world championships and Olympics, but also because Hungary was one of the eight founding members of the International Swimming Federation when it was founded in 1908.

Szijjártó pointed out that Hungary is home to the headquarters of two international sports federations and ten UN-affiliated organizations, all of which are satisfied with the conditions.
Of course, it will be a great recognition for Hungary if the global headquarters of the International Swimming Federation moves to Budapest. It is a stated goal of the organization’s leaders that at least half of the staff at the headquarters, which will govern the world’s swimming, should be Hungarian,
the minister said.
“Obviously, their move here will boost sports tourism enormously and will further increase Hungary’s already important role in world swimming and water polo,” he added.
