The Mai Manó House’s exhibition entitled Like You and Me – Young Hungarian Photography, opening in Budapest on Wednesday, presents the themes, technical experiments, and genre-specific features of contemporary Hungarian photography through 100 contemporary works by thirty young photographers.
The exhibition examines whether there is coherence in the experiences of individuals born in the particular political climate of the post-1980s era, who experienced the digital boom at first hand and used its products at a beginner skill level, and how these can be found in the photographers’ works. It seeks to answer, among other questions, whether there is a collective generational experience, the Mai Manó House told MTI on Wednesday.
The exhibition entitled Like You and Me (Mint Te és Én) can only present a small slice of the work that has defined contemporary Hungarian photography.
The press release quotes Zita Sárvári, the curator of the exhibition, as saying that the multi-generational experience of photography and the creative methods of contemporary imaging techniques have created recurring motifs and thematic interests: among others, child-rearing, family, memory, media experiments, border crossings, renewed traditional technologies, anthropological and social research, identity.
“But the diverse oeuvres of the selected artists did not justify forcing them into units based on their single work or their technical solutions, because these works can be approached from multiple perspectives as self-contained aesthetic entities,”
the curator pointed out.
Like You and Me is on view at the Mai Manó House until August 9.
