The world’s 24th Madame Tussauds exhibition space opens in Budapest on Thursday at Palazzo Dorottya.
Next to foreign historical figures and celebrities, the 51 life-size figures will be joined by 17 Hungarian ones, including composer Ferenc Liszt, governor-president Lajos Kossuth, politician István Széchenyi, known as “the Greatest Hungarian,” and poet Sándor Petőfi.
Paul Fox, UK Ambassador to Budapest, said that they were celebrating not only the expansion of the world-famous exhibition, but also Budapest’s rich cultural heritage and vibrant spirit.
The ambassador underscored that a great British brand is establishing itself in Hungary and that
it is currently the only Madame Tussauds panopticon in Central Europe.
At the opening ceremony, Olympic champion swimmer Katinka Hosszú, László Papp Jr., descendants of famous soccer player Ferenc Puskás, and the family of Jimmy Zámbó were also present at the opening ceremony, as Hosszú, boxing legend László Papp, Golden Team icon Puskás, and singer Jimmy Zámbó, who died tragically, were also given wax figures.
Hosszú told Mandiner that she took part in the design of the wax statue and is very pleased with what she saw:
“It is a great honor to have a statue made of me,”
said the Olympic champion. László Papp Jr., the son of boxing champion Laci Papp, had also taken part in the process of creating the statue. Jimmy Zámbó’s siblings and sons also came to the opening, and Krisztián Zámbó was moved as he embraced the wax sculpture of his father.
The interiors of the exhibition will feature a number of iconic buildings and monuments from the country. Visitors can walk through the Buda Castle Tunnel, meet stars on the Danube embankment, watch a helicopter filming on the Fisherman’s Bastion, and immerse themselves in the special world of spas.
According to a statement from the organizers, during the design phase, they asked the public who they would most like to see.
Next to many other Hungarian and foreign personalities, the Madame Tussauds exhibition in Budapest features Harry Houdini, Béla Lugosi, King Matthias, Sissi, King St. Stephen, as well as Pope Francis, the late Queen Elizabeth II, Beyoncé, Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Tom Cruise, Penélope Cruz, Xi Jinping, Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Downey Jr., Lady Gaga, Mikhail Gorbachev, Ronald Reagan, Steven Spielberg, and Donald Trump.
Only in Budapest will the public be able to see life-size sculptures of Bud Spencer, Chuck Norris, and Peter Falk, the organizers said.
