Once there was a shepherd in almost every village, but there are only a few left today. However, once a year you can meet many of them at the Shepherds’ Meeting and Festival in Olaszfalu in Veszprém county.
At a press conference, the the host of the event, the Zöldág Lovasudvar (Zöldág Riding Stables) in Olaszfalu, said that the program scheduled for May 19 and 20, is a good example of one of the objectives of the Veszprém-Balaton 2023 European Capital of Culture project year, which is to introduce the public to the already popular Bakony-Balaton sites, as well as to the quieter villages and the lesser-known sides of the Bakony-Balaton identity.
Almost thirty shepherds still live and work in the Bakony and Lake Balaton Highlands (Balaton-felvidék). The program will also provide them with an opportunity for dialogue, and fellow shepherds from further afield, including the Highlands and the south, will also be able to get to know each other.
As an opening, representatives of various disciplines and researchers will meet practicing shepherds in a workshop. Both sides have a wealth of knowledge that is sometimes untapped, but the event is an opportunity to bring it to the surface. Ecological and sustainability aspects will be discussed, but the organizers will also look further afield, with herders from Kenya, Mongolia, Iran, and Spain.
The public is also expected in Olaszfalu, where all the shepherds will be dressed in their traditional costumes, as will the foreign participants in the day’s conference. Singing and folk dance groups will perform.
