The Generali Children’s Island kicks off the holiday season with a three-day festival under the shady trees of Hajógyári Sziget in Budapest. One of the largest free family events in the country, it will feature concerts by popular performers, a puppet theater, dance, quizzes, sports, jugglers and artists, a bouncy castle, crafts, and much more for families to enjoy from June 16-18, from 10am to 6pm.
This year, children and their parents can celebrate the start of the summer holiday in a real festival atmosphere on the Hajógyári Sziget over one long weekend. On Friday, the fun starts with Judit Halász, Apacuka music band, and Vilmos Gryllus, well-known artists whose songs for children have been very popular for decades.
In addition to the performances, it is worth taking a trip around the island, where there are some exciting and fabulous venues for kids.
In “Kukutyin” they can learn the old trades: a weaver, boot-maker, honey-maker, hatter, and many other craftsmen live and work here, whose merchandise is blown away by a great windstorm and can only be put back up again with the help of children. For those who want to discover the animals of the countryside alongside village life, there is the petting zoo, while the Crafts Palace is a great place for creative types.
The Children’s Paradise focuses on environmental awareness, with gardening, herbs, and birds, as well as a nature walk to discover the wildlife of the island. And International Danube Day will showcase the wildlife of Hungary’s famous river.
For those looking for a more active program, there is the Karamella Circus World, where participants can even earn an artist diploma, or the return of the Four Seasons Giant Bouncy Castle, a big favorite on the Children’s Island.
Organizers are also preparing a venue for the little ones, with the Baby Playhouse offering everything from nappy-changing to developmental activities and advice for 0 to 2-year-olds.
