Hungary’s role in the organization of East-West transit traffic will be further strengthened. It will significantly help with the delivery of Ukrainian agricultural goods to Africa and the Middle East, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said in Kisvárda, eastern Hungary, on Thursday. He added that this is to prevent a food crisis in the above mentioned regions, which could trigger migration waves.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Transit-Speed Kft. hall, the minister said that the fully family-owned transport company had built two new warehouses worth 3.8 billion forints (EUR 10 million), for which the state had provided 1.4 billion forints (EUR 3.7 million) in subsidies.
In his speech, he pointed out that the development will create 20 new jobs and allow the trans-shipment of 200 truckloads of goods per day from the wide railway gauge from Ukraine.
“The significant increase in this trans-shipment capacity will strengthen Hungary’s role in the organization of east-west transit traffic,” he emphasized.
Péter Szijjártó stressed that one of the direct consequences of the conflict in Ukraine is the change in transport routes, which has increased the importance of predictable transit, especially for grain and other agricultural products, the export of which is vital for supplying countries in Africa and the Middle East. This is how the largest rail trans-shipment capacities on Ukraine’s western border have been created here in Hungary, despite the fact that we have a short border with Ukraine compared to the others, he underlined.
