Hungarian footballer Géza Turi has become the oldest active goalkeeper in the world in terms of front-rank leagues, according to the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) on Monday.
The IFFHS announced on its website that the Hungarian goalkeeper was 49 years and 64 days old when he played for Faroese side KÍ Klaksvík in a 1-0 away win against HB Tórshavn on Sunday. The Hungarian athlete, who is employed by the club as goalkeeper coach, was forced to play because the club’s number one goalkeeper fell ill and the reserve player was injured. In addition, the Hungarian footballer did well not to concede a goal, even though the opponents were one of the strongest teams in the league.

Géza Turi was 44 years old when he last played in a local league match in June 2018. He previously won the Hungarian championship with Zalaegerszeg TE (ZTE) in 2002 in Hungary. He has been living in the Faroe Islands for 17 years now.
A similar thing happened earlier in Hungary, when Diósgyőr hosted Videoton in the final round of the 1997/98 season, and the home team’s number one and reserve goalkeeper were both injured, so the starting line-up included György Veréb, a goalkeeper in his 49th year.
